Peer Court
Cases are referred to Peer
Court from juvenile probation, school site police officers, the juvenile
court or local police agencies. As a first time offender, the juvenile
goes through Peer Court and is tried by a teen prosecuting attorney and
a teen defense attorney. The cases are heard by a jury of teens that will
deliberate and render a sentence. Adult attorney mentors along with an
adult judge assists both defense and prosecuting attorneys throughout
the trial. The defendant has already admitted guilt to the offense and
has agreed to go through the Peer Court Program. The teen attorneys are
making their cases in front of the jury to determine the sentence. The
coordinator works with the defendant and the family to ensure that the
sentence has been completed. The sentence is intended to be constructive
and to actively involve the juvenile in the community as well in future
Peer Court sessions. Court begins at 6:00pm and ends at 8:00pm one Thursday
night a month.
